Hair Tips for Cold Season
Tips on how to manage your hair during cold seasons
With cold weather approaching, it is the time of year when your natural hair suffers the most due to the change in temperature. Here are some hair care tips to help make sure your hair stays healthy and thriving throughout the colder seasons.
Keep your hair moisturized. This is the most important part of a cold season hair care regimen. Thick, curly hair is more prone to dryness than looser and straighter textures and it’s important when moisturizing to pay special attention to the ends, since it’s the oldest part of your hair and usually the driest. Using the liquid, oil, cream (LOC) method of moisturizing is recommended for natural curls, but the order usually depends on the person and their hair needs. You may find that you need to moisturize more often during the cooler months with products that are a bit heavier which gives your hair extra protection against the cold. Try a leave-in conditioner as your first step after cleansing and conditioning and follow up with some hair oil.
Deep condition your hair often during fall and winter months. It is recommended to do weekly deep conditioning treatments as it gets colder. Find a deep conditioner that is enriched with fatty acids and natural oils which will penetrate the hair to restore the moisture the hair loses during cold weather. For added benefits, wear a shower cap while deep conditioning to allow your natural body heat to warm up the product and provide better results.
If possible, steam your hair, as the lack of moisture in the winter air can have a damaging effect on your curls. Steaming helps combat dryness by opening up the hair cuticle and adding water moisture. This is recommended while deep conditioning to enhance the effect of the product. If you don't have a steamer on hand, you can use a shower cap and wrap a towel on top for a similar effect.
Keep your hair moisturized by starting from the inside and stay hydrated, drinking plenty water. It may be a challenge for some as the weather gets cooler, but it's crucial for healthy hair overall. Usually, 64 ounces per day is a common recommendation, but how much you actually need will depend on your body and lifestyle. Try drinking room temperature water in colder months to promote a higher water intake.
Using protective styling and coverings on your hair as it gets cooler helps you retain length and moisture. Styles with braids, twists, buns, scarves and such help keep hair away from the cold altogether, which lessen the chances of damage. This is the easiest way to shield your hair from the harsh weather. Be mindful that if you are using head wraps, be sure it is made of satin. Material made of cotton or wool can strip the hair of moisture.
